PRESS – Ruthless Amibtion – Chris Christie Scandal

Breaking News:

Christie’s secret diary, Revealed! | Moran | NJ.com
Excerpts:

“…Damn, I wish I could float a few subpoenas like the old days, and then make sure the TV cameras were in position when my boys hauled away cardboard boxes from his home office. Being governor sucks compared to being prosecutor.”

“…I wish Tom Kean would sit down and shut up. I’m not talking about the son, though he bugs me, too. I’m talking about the father, the guy I was once stupid enough to call my mentor.”

“…I have Jeb Bush in town romancing my donors, including that back-stabbing creep Woody Johnson, the owner of the Jets. Did Johnson think I sat with him in his luxury box for the fun of watching his loser team lose again? He’s on my list, too.

“…I thought Morning Joe was going to kiss me back in 2010 when I told him those lies about cutting $11 billion from my first budget. And how about the dopes at 60 Minutes telling America that I cut spending by 26 percent? If I told them the word “gullible” was not in the dictionary, they’d believe me!”

“…But what really keeps me awake at night is my Mario Cuomo moment in 2012, my decision to stay out of the president race. I could have crushed Mitt Romney, that phony robot. And all the other candidates were so nuts that I had all the billionaires begging me to jump in. Now they’re all with Bush!”

“…The truth is that the fun part of this gig is the campaigning, not the governing. Jet me back to Iowa where I can tell that great story about my mother’s death bed again, the one that explains why I always tell the truth.”

“…My consolation is this: If I lose this thing, I’ll find some gig that pays enough to buy my own flights on private jets. I won’t even have to pretend that Jerry Jones and the King of Jordan are personal friends.”

— In my last column, I mentioned that former Assemblyman Louis Manzo of Jersey City was a guest on radio shows around the country talking about Gov. Christie and federal prosecuting scalawags. It helps to push his book. What I didn’t realize is that his book website has a blog where he pontificates on stuff that’s in the headlines, such as the indictment of Texas Gov. Perry. The name of his blog: The Chris Christie Scandals Blog.

Port Authority cops told to ‘shut up’ about GWB lane closures, memo says

Today’s Star-Ledger headline story, is based upon a lead WCBS Channel 2 news story [the news clip appears at the bottom of the Ledger’s news link]is rattling the cages of the Christie camp. The report discloses an effort by Christie brass in the Port Authority Police Department to silence cops trying to alleviate the hazardous conditions posed by the George Washington Bridge 4 day traffic jam created by Christie’s office last September.Subsequent to the refusal of Fort Lee, NJ’s mayor to support Governor Christie’s 2013 reelection bid, Christie’s office ordered lane closures on the bridge in order to gridlock Fort Lee, which sits at the western mouth of the George Washington bridge and punish the Mayor of the town for his failure to endorse Christie’s 2013 reelection bid.Ironically, Christie has spent more than $7M of taxpayer’s money to date on his own self-initiated investigation which cleared him of any involvement in the Bridgegate scandal. Apparently, Christie’s team of lawyer’s “very thorough investigation” managed to miss the inconvenient details reported in today’s news items.

Anger Is The Honest Response To Injustice

By Andrew Kreig The Star Ledger’s review of “Ruthless Ambition” is superficial and misinformed. For this important new book by former Jersey City Mayoral candidate Louis Manzo about Gov. Christie, Reviewer Josh McMahon evaluated Christie and the justice system through pro-prosecution, rose-colored glasses. The reviewer’s suggestion that serious injustices cannot occur without revelation contradicts my decades of experience as a reporter, attorney and author, including four years of intensive research into the prosecution of Manzo, other Bid Rig III defendants in New Jersey, and similar cases nationwide. My non-partisan Justice Integrity Project, like many other researchers, has identified many abusive practices in the nation’s courts sustained by both political parties and prosecutors. A serious examination of Christie’s role must include his retention in 2006 by the Bush administration as U.S. attorney for New Jersey. Christie was one of the “Loyal Bushies” who avoided firing in the great political purge nationally of U.S. attorneys who failed to use their offices sufficiently for political goals. Many disgraceful prosecutions resulted from politically partisan prosecutors. The Obama administration failed to investigate the abuses seriously because a strong culture exists in law enforcement of mutual support. The Obama Justice Department investigation of the 2006 U.S. attorney firing scandal was a whitewash that examined only the firing of New Mexico’s U.S. attorney. Off limits were the prosecutions orchestrated by those like Christie retained by the politicized Bush Justice Department with the connivance of White House advisor Karl Rove. Many examples exist nationally of frightening abuses then and now. Your reviewer wants readers to believe that it is not credible that a cover-up could hide misdeeds because it might involved several individuals. In fact, the chief federal judge in Massachusetts published in 1999 a 600-page finding of a fact against 22 federal prosecutors and FBI agents accused of misconduct for more than a decade. Two high-ranking FBI officials were indicted for murder conspiracy, and the prosecution led also to the recent conviction of mobster and longtime federal informant Whitey Bulger on murder conspiracy charges. The judge, for whom I worked as law clerk from 1990 to 1991 during a major Mafia case, has repeatedly urged federal authorities at the highest levels — including U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder — to stop tolerating gross misconduct. Those who have looked into allegations of serious misconduct elsewhere know that only a small percentage of abuses are seriously examined, whether in court or at the Justice Department because of the heavy pressures on defendants to plead guilty and because whistleblowing is so discouraged. Furthermore, the courts are being stacked increasingly with judges who rubber-stamp prosecution decisions that can place enormous, unfair pressure on defendants. Harvey Silverglate’s book “Three Felonies A Day,” documents the many powerful tools that prosecutors use to coerce guilty pleas, including in white-collar cases like Bid Rig III. Once a target has been identified, especially in politically sensitive matters, the government may spare no expense to crush a defendant. The amount of money spent on the Bid Rig III investigation via the main informant alone is mind-boggling. In Alabama, the federal government recently spent more than $50 million on two trials of suspects that failed to result in a single conviction on a single count. A few defendants can overcome such odds, but not many. The timid, complacent and obviously uninformed reviewer criticizes the book as angry. Anger is the honest response to injustice. Should a victim like Manzo be happy? Humorous? What? The financially strapped media have cut back on day-to-day court coverage that can place such activities into proper perspective. I used to talk to judges, prosecutors, defendants, and so forth every day. Reporters and authors these days find it much easier and cheaper to rely heavily on court public information officers – a job virtually unknown when I began my career as a daily newspaper reporter in 1970. “Government PR Officials Increasingly Control News, Studies Find,” I reported last month based on findings announced at the National Press Club. (Like all references here, these are from the Justice Integrity Project site (www.justice-integrity.org). Last week, I summarized the years of abuses revealed during the Christie tenure as U.S. attorney and predicted that growing public awareness of his misconduct would help lead to a GOP nomination of Jeb Bush in 2016. Separately, I reported how Alabama authorities just released a journalist jailed for five months in a libel case. The jailing violated all relevant precedents forbidding pre-trial prior restraint, secret proceedings, and other due process violations. A common denominator in these appalling situations has been shallow reporting and timid responses by journalism organizations, in part because the media are downsizing so rapidly and otherwise cutting back on in-depth reporting. In Alabama, for example, three of the state’s largest newspapers publish just three print editions per week. So, as elsewhere, journalists and their organizations face pervasive (and unusually unspoken) pressure to go-along-and-get-along. This leaves readers and the rest of the public in the dark. One solution? Readers deserve book reviews that address the issues.

Stung and revitalized: Manzo to publish book about Christie and the Chris Christie Scandals next month

By Max Pizarro, PolitickerNJ louis-manzo-acquittedExonerated after getting tagged with charges in Operation Bid Rig, former Assemblyman Lou Manzo (D-31) in April will publish Ruthless Ambition: The Rise and Fall of Chris Christie. For weeks, Hudson sources have buzzed about the book, which Manzo claims tells the real back story behind former U.S. Attorney Christie’s consolidation of power – and political crackup. Manzo told PolitickerNJ this morning that the book covers Christie’s entire public service career: from Morris County Freeholder to US Attorney to Governor. “Many unknown facts concerning Christie are revealed,” said Manzo, 59, of Belmar, who served in the State Legislature from 2004 to 2008, and ran unsuccessfully for the state senate against Sandy Cunningham in 2007 and for mayor of Jersey City in 2009. Manzo had run for mayor before, but it was during that last run that he fell into an infamous federal dragnet. In August of 2009, the feds charged Manzo with taking $27,500 in cash payments from disgraced, wire-wearing developer Solomon Dwek. Paraded in handcuffs into Newark, Manzo looked like he was bound for prison along with others caught in the sting who did time, including then-Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini and political operative Joe Cardwell. But a defiant Manzo successfully stared down those and other charges, albeit at great personal and financial cost, he said, all detailed in the book published by TrineDay. “The book will expose some bombshell scandals that were still under wraps—mainly though previously undisclosed court documents and Department of Justice documents long since sealed,” Manzo promised. Others also beat the federal rap, including Ridgefield Mayor Anthony Suarez and former Assemblyman L. Harvey Smith (D-31). “After five years of research, I was able to document how the Bid Rig III sting was put together by Christie and his associates for the very express purpose of advancing his political agenda,” Manzo said. “I also show how this was merely just one spoke in the wheel of Christie’s other schemes to advance that same agenda. The book was thoroughly researched—a bibliography and videography of more than 50 pages and volumes of court and Department of Justice documents, some which have never before been released.  Now his whole story will be told.”
